Controversial street ads popping up in NYC linked to award show.
A mysterious poster for the MTV VMA's caught the eye of Brooklyn residents and the blogosphere-at-large today, leaving people wondering if the awards show just got edgier than ever.
The ads show loose line drawings of Trayvon Martin and George Zimmerman with the words, "He'd rather be a d*** than a swallower." The line is a lyric from Kanye West's track "New Slaves" and their is speculation that the poster is the work of Yeezy's DONDA creative agency. MTV denies having anything to do with the controversial campaign.
West is, in fact, said to be performing "Black Skinhead" at the show and tweeted in January that he wanted DONDA to "design the MTV awards." Pulling pranks is certainly not out of league for either the provocative artist nor the network. However, touching on the topic of Trayvon Martin and George Zimmerman is rather sensitive. Last month, Zimmerman was acquitted of murdering Martin in 2012, a verdict that sparked rallies throughout the nation.
While MTV is distancing itself from the poster, we'll just have to wait until the VMAs on Sunday August 25 to find out.
